Empty ocean full of trash
Last week, the world faced again a painful mirror by the article of Newcastle yachtsman Ivan Macfadyen. The naked truth is that we are destroying our oceans! While racing from Melbourne to Osaka exactly ten years after his last participation, Macfadyen encountered silence and trash. An empty ocean, no bird life, callous fishermen and an amount of trash beyond imagination. The main question is how to stop and solve this environmental crime…

Zeilsport (her)ontdekt crowdfunding
Het fenomeen "crowdfunding´ wordt steeds vaker geassocieerd met topsport en nu ook met zeilen. Geen verrassing uiteraard met het huidige sponsorklimaat en de afnemende subsidies. Zelfs technisch directeur van NOC*NSF, Maurits Hendriks, pleit voor nieuwe financieringsvormen voor topsport in Nederland, zo zei hij bij NOS Langs de Lijn. Ik heb me eens verdiept in de zeilcampagnes, die op deze manier naar budget zoeken.

"Our public doesn´t know anything about the Fastnet Race and not much about sailing either, so covering Team SCA won´t make it in the editorial meeting", sounded the answer of our national sports channel upon my question to follow the Dutch girls onboard of Team SCA this summer. It remains a challenge to introduce sailing and in particular ocean racing to a wider audience in the Netherlands. And what a great view of the Defender to take the most prestigious and oldest Cup in the sailing sports to the next level of new generation sailing. You might have heard about Conny van Rietschoten, who won the Whitbread Round the World Race twice in the late seventies and early eighties.
